The Underground City on Wolin Island is a unique military complex from World War II, hidden beneath the coastal dunes. It was built in the 1930s as part of a coastal defense battery. For decades its existence was strictly secret – known only to a narrow circle of officers in the Polish People's Republic. It was only in May 2014 that the site was opened to visitors and today it is a branch of the Coastal Defense Museum.
The complex consists of nearly a kilometer of corridors, several dozen rooms, and a few bunkers. A fully equipped engine room bunker, where some of the equipment is still operational, allows a glimpse into the world of 20th-century military technology. This place, which was inaccessible for years and managed by the military, now impresses with its authenticity and attention to detail.
The tour is conducted in an interactive form – tourists form a "platoon" that, under the supervision of a guide-commander, embarks on a historical journey. The route leads through tunnels and bunkers, and reenactments and guide stories transport visitors back to the times of the Cold War and the Polish People's Republic. It is not only a history lesson but also an emotional experience.
The tour lasts about 90 minutes. Entry to the site is only possible with a guide, and the number of places is limited. It is worth remembering that the temperature underground does not exceed 10°C – it is advisable to bring warmer clothing. For history enthusiasts, this is a must-visit spot on the map of Wolin.
